Hawaii is a place that almost every American dreams of visiting. Hawaii is filled with fragrant flowers, five star resorts, white sand beaches and nightly luaus. The island of Hawaii is known as the big island and is depicted as a wonderful tropical island with lots to see and discover. The capital of Hawaii, Honolulu, is located on the island of Oahu. The language of Polynesian is often times spoken throughout the islands. Each island located in the state of Hawaii has its own unique culture and its own attractions for tourists to visit. Each island also has its own topography with some islands containing mountains and some containing mostly sandy beaches. The Hawaiian Islands were created out of lava under the ocean that built up from volcanoes and cooled; this is how the Hawaiian Islands were formed. Five volcanoes formed the big island of Hawaii. The Hawaiian Islands have a two season climate. The only differences in the climate are the amount of rainfall in the specific topographical areas and the humidity.
Hawaii contains the tallest mountain called Mauna Kea and stands taller than Mount Everest at 33,476 feet making it the tallest in the world. This mountain is a dormant volcano which is why only about 13,803 feet of the volcano is above sea level. This mountain means White Mountain in Hawaiian.
Maui is the second largest island in the state and is nicknamed The Valley Isle. Maui contains four islands. Maui is a large tourist area with most tourists visiting the areas of Hana Highway, HaleakalÄ National Park, and Lahaina. Maui contains a rainforest that has been largely unexplored due to its terrain. This island has a large industrial community that has in some ways hurt the environment. Part of this is due to pollution in the water that has destroyed some of the coral reefs, but this pollution is not just because of the industrial economy on this island it is also due to tourists.
Another island located in the state of Hawaii is Oahu. This is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands and is also the most populated. Oahu is also known as The Gathering Place. Many of the famous places that tourists will visit are located on this island. Some famous gathering places for tourists include Waikiki, Diamond Head, and the ever famous Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor is a gathering place for war veterans and other people who stop to pay their respects to veterans who have fought here. Overall there are many islands that encompass the state of Hawaii and each island has something rare and unique to offer.
